Unless the Lord Build the House

Psalms 127:1 “Except the Lord build the house, they labor in vain that build it: Except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.”

Recently, I watched several back-to-back episodes of Flip This House. I went to bed late, and when upon waking the next morning, a thought floated through my brain. “I want to Flip Your House. As I reflected upon that thought and exactly how that might apply to my life, I began to see quite a few similarities of life to remodeling projects and preparing a house for the market.

First, you have to assess the damage or the area you need change and what determine areas that are good and solid. Is the foundation sure? Are there any leaks in the roof?  Are the walls solid and able to support the weight of the roof? How dated is the interior?  Do I need more space for to accommodate the future occupants? How many rooms do I need to renovate? These questions about a natural house are all applicable to a spiritual house.

Is my foundation sure on God’s word? How much time do I spend in God’s word reaffirming that foundation? That first question smacked me in the face!  I often accept the subtle lies that come to me and say, “You have been in church all your life. You know the word through and through. You have been memorizing scripture since you were able to speak.” And the list goes on… which brings me to the second question.

Are there any leaks in the roof?  Just because you have been in church all your life or heard the Word or memorized it since your youth, does not mean that it has not leaked out, nor does it mean that the covering has not weakened exposing your spirit to the elements which in turn, produce rot to your support system.  Even a small leak will eventually lead to a major repair project.  I do not know about you, but my covering needs more than a patch job!  Next question please.

Are the walls solid and able to support the weight of the roof? If that roof has leaked allowing the moisture to settle in the walls, which eventually will produce rot, then the walls, which support your house, have been compromised. Water damage is usually a slow process that the owners do not recognize overnight. It can take months and even years to be noticeable enough for us to spot and question where it came from.  I am, as I type, opening myself for a water damage inspection by the master inspector, Holy Spirit.

Moving right along, I see the last three questions as being tied together. The age of the furnishings, how much space I need, and how many rooms need changing, are all very closely related. The furnishings, the storage space, the type of flooring or the color of the walls all will directly affect the number of rooms needing change. How much space I need or am willing to provide in these rooms will also affect the number of rooms to be modified. How many rooms in my spiritual house have outdated furnishings or need a wall knocked out to provide more space?

Scripture tells us in John 14:2 “In my Father’s house are many mansions.” “Mansions”, is not a very practical translation. The word mansions, is translated in other places, rooms.  How many rooms in my house do I give Holy Spirit access to? Am I willing to let Him rip up my outdated carpet and uncover those beautiful hardwood floors that have been hidden thirty years or more? Am I willing to let him reveal the real me, even though the process might require much hard work? How much space am I giving him to work with?

This initial assessment will determine the second and equally important question; How much am I willing to invest? I do not know about you, but this analogy hit very close to home for me! I now have more questions than answers but I am going to start on that project list today, beginning with shoring up the foundation. God’s word is our foundation. The strength of the foundation will determine the future of your house. Start Flipping Your House right now. Open up your Bible, turn on your CD player, or go to gatewaybelievers.com and strengthen your foundation today. I guarantee it WILL increase your value!
