A Time to Peel

~1st Corinthians 13:4 (LB) "Love is very patient and kind, never jealous,or envious, never boastful, or proud."A few years ago, a group of us were cleaning and painting the inside of a beautiful, old church. I overheard someone comment to a friend that I was working fast. To which my friend replied that I did everything in a hurry. I knew she was right. I never got the hang of taking my time. When I am in the process of one thing, I am thinking about what I am going to be doing next. I have a hard time slowing myself down. I realized that I have a lack of patience. In Ist Corinthians 13:4, The Living Bible says,"love is very patient."

Patience doesn't rush. Very few mistakes are made when a person doesn't get in a hurry. We are to strive to become more like Jesus. He is very patient. His dear friend, Lazarus was very sick. His sisters sent for Jesus to come. Jesus did not take the next flight out to go to Lazarus. He didn't get there until His friend had been dead for days. He was already buried. Jesus knew that love is patient. That is not always easy. Because He took his time, a greater miracle took place. He raised His friend from the dead!

I love my husband. He is a wonderful person. He has a ritual that drives me crazy! It does not matter what else is taking place in his day. He never waivers from this one thing. Every morning he goes into the dining room. He sits down. His Bible is open in front of him. He takes out his pocket knife and begins to slowly peel an apple. He doesn't get in a rush. It sometimes seems as if he is doing this in slow motion. He enjoys every tiny slice of his apple. The clock seems to meto tick louder. The hands on the clock go faster during his routine.

As I watch him, I can't help but think of the many things we have to do that day. Why does this bother me so? I have not accomplished his gift. I want to be more like him. He will call me away from a sink full of dirty dishes to enjoy a sunset with him. He loves to watch the deer that comes up into our back yard. He will enjoy them as long as they stay. How many precious moments like these have I rushed through? I am sure I have passed up wonderful conversations. Jesus desires for us to enjoy an abundant life. I am going to keep practicing slowing down. I am not there yet. There are priceless moments waiting to be enjoyed. My life will become more abundant with blessings that I could have missed out on. I think I may even be ready to peel an apple myself now!
